Dr. Pliss holds a Ph.D. degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic (2001).

In 2007 he joined the faculty of the Institute for Lasers, Photonics and Biophotonics (ILPB) at University at Buffalo, SUNY.

Artem’s multidisciplinary research is on the interface of cell science, biophotonics and bioengineering. He investigates cellular physiology using quantitative optical approaches including conventional, confocal, and multiphoton fluorescence microscopy, Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging (FLIM), Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) imaging and micro-Raman spectroscopy (BCAbox). This research is focused on the molecular environment in vital cellular organelles and its transformations throughout cellular growth, disease progression or drug-cell interactions. Artem is also very interested in development and applications of advanced biophotonics and nanophotonics technology for modern biomedical research.
